It turns out he is the famous detective Shureluck Jones and winded up 100 years later in pursuit of Norton Nimnul. Apparently, the professor got a hold on Gadget's time machine plans and is now using a duplicate to steal world-famous diamonds from all times and places. But that is only the top of the iceberg.
