The 2002 Golden Acorn Awards ceremonies took place at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City at December 29, 2002, starting at ca. 7:00 PM (Central Standard Time), thus beginning the new great tradition. Inspired by Matt Plotecher's Plato Awards, the GA Awards recognize those works of the Rangerphile community that were worthy of honor. This first awards ceremony was by far the hardest, as it was not only the longest with the fully separate International Categories but also the eligible works represented work from the past several years as the organizers had to play catch-up for three years passed since Platos.

Dr. Indy recalls:

The idea for the Golden Acorn awards was a continuation of Matt Plotecher's excellent first effort, the Plato Awards. That first awards ceremony had a definite positive impact on the community and brought us together. I decided that it was too good a thing to do only once.

Rennod got involved early on, and he was a big help. We had a lot of IM sessions (a few of which I still have in the Great Archives) and we planned out the structure and ideas for the Awards. I liked how the Platos had gone, but I thought it should really be on a bigger scale with more community involvement.

In some ways, I bit off more than I could chew with the International Categories. That was purely my idea, a way to bring in the community members outside of America. It doubled the size of the ceremony and there were too few volunteers to do all the work so I ended up writing all the award introductions for the International Awards. I can still remember thinking, "Do I have any Ranger-related characters left to use?"

That first effort was a real challenge, but with Rennod's help, advice and tallying the nominations and votes we carried it off pretty well. Community involvement's grown each year, and there's a sense of wanting to "top" the last time now--and I'm included on that. I'm as eager as anyone to see what the latest version will bring.

Artwork was sparse for the 2002 ceremony, which makes acceptance speech artwork that Shelley Pleger did even more wonderful and important.

The awards for 'Best All-Time Artwork' and 'Best All-Time Fanfic' were amended and named after Deborah Walley and Tex Henson respectively to commemorate two people who made Rescue Rangers possible and to the great regret of all the Rangerphiles passed away.

The lessons learned from this initial year helped to shape what the GA Awards have become today. In the years to come many nominations became history, as well as the International Awards section as a whole. One more reason to drop it was not to make The J.A.M. homeless, as his house already was stuffed with 18 Golden Acorns. 15 of them he got for his epic drama Death of the Comedian, which set a seemingly unbeatable record of GAA's received by one fanfic. Little did Rangerphiles know...
