Chapter 1

"It's About Time"

On April 14, 2012, Van Man is trying to adjust a life without his best friend Gadget Hackwrench whose belongings are being sold off by the bank following her disappearance six months ago. Outside Gadget's garage, an intact duplicate of the DeLorean time machine, which was believed to be destroyed, appears in front of Van Man. Following hints inside, he meets the elderly Edna Strickland, a former newspaper reporter, and finds from one of her archived newspapers that Gadget was put in jail as a suspect in an arson case in 1931, during the time of Prohibition, and that she was shot the next day by bootlegging gansters led by Kid Tannen. Van Man travels back in time to June 13, 1931 and meets a young 17 year-old high school student. Van Man cooperates with a young Hackwrench, a relative of Gadget's from 1931 to release Gadget from her cell, and subpoenas his great-grandfather Arthur – Tannen's accountant – in the process.

Chapter 2

"Get Tannen!"

After rescuing Gadget and while preparing to return to 2012, Van Man finds himself starting to fade out of existence. The future newspaper Van Man has brought, now reflecting the new timeline, shows that Artie was caught by Tannen's gang and will be killed that night. Van Man is able to go back six hours earlier in the day to convince Artie to leave town, assuring that George and Van Man are born. Gadget and Van Man return to 2012 and discover that, without Artie's presence and evidence, Kid Tannen was able to expand his gang and took over New York. Gadget returns them to two months after their previous visit to August 25, 1931, the night that Kid's moll, Trixie Trotter, was supposed to provide crucial evidence to arrest Tannen. Van Man, with the help of young Hackwrench and Edna Strickland, and of Titanic's grandfather, Officer Danny Parker, convince Artie to come out of hiding and to coax Trixie to rat out on Tannen. After Tannen is captured with the help of young Hackwrench's rocket car, Gadget and Van Man prepare to return to the corrected 2012. However, they are unaware that Edna, having become smitten with young Chip's great-great grandfather, distracts the boy from seeing Frankenstein that night, the film that leads to several of Gadget's inventions. Upon arriving in 2012, the original Gadget disappears, and in the confusion, Van Man crashes the DeLorean through a billboard, disabling the time machine.

Chapter 3

"Citizen Chip"

Van Man is able to get inside the walled community of New York, finding it run like a totalitarianism society under "Citizen Chip" promoting a clean society. After meeting this timeline's counterparts of his parents, Biff, and Titanic, finding them all quietly discontent with their lives, Van Man commits several acts to earn enough demerits to be taken to see Citizen Chip. There, Citizen Chip believes Van Man is having a mental breakdown, but Van Man is able to convince his friend that he has traveled through time. Chip suspects Van Man's story may be true, but requires him to show him evidence of the citizens' displeasure. Van Man returns to George, discovering George's secret surveillance tapes have been stolen by Biff under mind control as part of a "Citizen Plus" program. Van Man follows Biff and soon discovers that Edna, now Chip's wife, is the true mastermind behind the society, having convinced a young Chip since 1931 to develop a perfect society. Chip discovers Edna's lair, and tells her to leave, while he speaks to Van Man having come to realize that this timeline is not what he wanted. Chip and Gadget goes off to repair the DeLorean to allow Van Man to return to fix it, but Van Man is captured by Edna. He learns that Edna has taken Chip and started administrating a brain-washing treatment and threatens to do the same to Van Man if he does not conform. Gadget is by herself fixing the DeLorean.
