The Writer: (voiceover) It happens sometimes. Friends come in and out of our lives, like busboys in a restaurant.

The Writer: (voiceover) Vern didn't just mean being off limits inside the junkyard, or fudging on his folks, or going on a hike up the road to Jenny's house. He meant those things, but it seems to me now it was more and that we all knew it. Everything was there and around us. We knew exactly who we were and exactly where we were going. It was grand.

The Writer: (voiceover) At the beginning of the school year, Vern had buried a quart jar of pennies underneath his house. He drew a treasure map so he could find them again. A week later, his mom cleaned out his room and threw away the map. Vern had been trying to find those pennies for nine months. Nine months, man. You didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Vern: Geez, Van. Why couldn't you have gotten breakfast stuff? Like Twinkies and Pez and Root Beer?

Van Man: Sorry, Vern. I guess a more experienced shopper could have gotten more for your seven dollars.

Chapter 4

[Chris drags Van Man behind the building to show him his gun]

Van Man: What kind of gun is that?

Chapter 5

Van Man goes into an unoccupied Fox Den.

Van Man: Why can't I be a famous writer? Like Stephen King?

Chapter 6

Chris: You're gonna be a great writer someday, Van. You might even write about us guys if you ever get hard-up for material.

Van Man:[wiping away his tears] Guess I'd have to be pretty hard-up, huh?

Chapter 7

Teddy: That was the all-time tornado dodge! Too cool! Vern, you were so scared you looked like that fat guy, Abbott Costello, when he saw the mummy.

Chapter 8

The Writer: (voiceover) The twister had knocked Ray Brower out of his Keds the same way it had knocked the life out of his body.

[after being handed the gun]

Van Man: Is it loaded?

Chris: No way! What do you think I am?

[gun goes off]

Van Man and Chris: Whoa!

Chapter 9

Ace: You got two choices. You leave quietly, we take the body. Or, you can stay, we beat you up, we take the body.

Van Man is pointing his gun at Ace and his gang.

Ace: What are you gonna do? Shoot us all?

Van Man: No, Ace. Just you.

Van Man fired the gun in the air as a warning shot of the approaching funnel clouds.

Ace and his gang ran away.

He'd seen many tornadoes over the years, so he wasn't afraid, but remained cautious. Van Man said he was transfixed by the twister, and he held his position until it was directly overhead.

Once inside the swirling cloud, Van Man said that everything was "as still as death." He reported smelling a strong gassy smell and had trouble breathing. When he looked up, he saw the circular opening directly overhead, and estimated it to be roughly 50 to 100 feet in diameter and about a half a mile high. The rotating cloud walls were made clearly visible by constant bursts of lighting. He also noticed a lot of smaller tornadoes forming and breaking free, making a loud hissing noise. The tornado then passed.

Chapter 10

Van Man then heard a loud rumbling followed by complete silence. The walls began to shake, and to his surprise, his roof was ripped away and thrown into the woods nearby. At this point, he looked up to find the tornado directly overhead. He described the inside as a smooth wall of clouds, with smaller twisters swirling around the inside before breaking free. Once again, non-stop lightning created a bluish light enabling him to see everything clearly. And then, just like that, the tornado passed and the sky turned sunny.

The Writer: (voiceover) [referring to Chris] Although I hadn't seen him in more than ten years, I know I'll miss him forever.

The Writer: (voiceover) [typing on computer] I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 21.
